Highlighting the "Top 10" Getaways In The Country
Ashling Cottage"You won’t believe you’re in Jersey. With two miles of clean sandy beach fronted by a noncommercial boardwalk, well-preserved Victorian hotels and gingerbread-trimmed houses with perfect lawns, just one chain store (Crabtree & Evelyn) and absolutely no fast-food joints, Spring Lake is blissfully out-of-date. It’s a favorite of New York City’s old Irish clans and anyone looking for an attitude-free stretch of coastline. The hotels are charming enough, but for a really quiet get-away, try Ashling Cottage B&B (106 Sussex Avenue, 888/274-5464 or 732/449-3553). There are 11 beach-fresh rooms in the 1877 inn, one block from the ocean. Book far in advance.

A Guest's Reminiscent Note
Over the years, my wife and I have stayed at many a bed and breakfast. Most have been enjoyable. But one in particular stands out as an all-time favorite.

Okay, I’ll admit that we’re more than a little partial to sand and surf, and since we live only an hour and a half from the Jersey shore, it's only natural that we find ourselves too often turning onto tree-lined Sussex Avenue in Spring Lake heading toward Ashling Cottage B&B.

There it is on the left, just one block from both the ocean and the lake. It’s a handsome Victorian "cottage" built in 1877 with the ten very comfortable rooms.

Ashling Cottage B&B offers a chance to get-away – to isolate ourselves from these so-called "conveniences" if only for a few days. You could say that it is our oasis. A place we enjoy in July and in October (the living-room fireplace, a good book and an inviting couch is a great way to pass a blustery fall day).

A sunrise run on the beach before a delicious breakfast is my idea of leisure. Since my wife Karen needs to be the first one on the beach, I let her go. For me, it’s a second cup of coffee on the screened porch overlooking the ocean and the lake with the morning paper.

In the evening, over a glass of wine on the porch we discuss informal restaurant reviews to whet our appetite. Then we’re off to dinner at one of the many local dining spots.

Whether you spend the day on the beach, play tennis, golf, shop in the village, borrow the inn’s bicycles for a ride around Spring Lake or just hang out on the porch and drink in the hospitality of Ashling Cottage B&B, we think you’ll agree that this is truly a wonderful place to get-away.

In fact the toughest part about Ashling Cottage visit is saying good-bye. But hey, we’ll be back again. Maybe we will see you there.

Dear Joanie and Bill,

We missed saying good-bye. Mike and I had a wonderful time, regardless of the weather. Your home is just lovely. And we thank you for being so warm and friendly. Our 10th wedding anniversary couldn’t have been more enjoyable!

If 50% of your guests feel even ½ as good as we did when we left, I’m sure you’ll be a wonderful success. We look forward to seeing you again. If you’re ever up our way give us a call.

Fondly,
Sue & Mike D.

Dear Joanie and Bill,

We wanted to drop you a note to say how much we enjoyed our stay. There is no need to recount the specifics; I know you both worked very hard to make it so. Nontheless, it does deserve some recognition and this is our way of saying -- Bravo!!

We're ready to credit you with the weather, the like of which we are not likely to see until the next millennium. But I hope it's not that long before we visit with you again.

Once more, our thanks and all good wishes and good luck for your continued success.

Hi,

I really enjoyed my visit with you. Your Bed & Breakfast is an enchanting delight and the boardwalk along the ocean is just beautiful. Spring Lake is a truly lovely retreat from the busy city life. I hope I can come again.

Thank You,

Dear Joanie & Bill,

We will always cherish our time with you. The balloons you provided for Bill’s special birthday event are still alive and well in our grandson’s bedroom.

The beauty and new life of Spring is a predictable reminder of the reliability of God’s faithfulness. Hold on to that optimism. He is in total control. We cherish our birthday weekend memory and are grateful for your gracious hospitality and a lovely memory.

Love,

Hi Joanie, Bill and Mike,

First I have to tell you what a wonderful time we had at Ashling Cottage. Since I have never stayed at a B&B and Tom never had any interest in that kind of accommodations, I was not quite sure what to expect. It was everything wonderful and more. We would love to come back again.

Thanks again for an enjoyable time and look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Hi Joanie, Bill and Mike,

Greetings! Thank you for contributing the amenities that contributed to a fun and relaxing "getaway". The room was very comfortable, the fireplace just charming, and breakfast - delicious. (Hats off to the chef!) And if you had a hand in the warm and sunny weather, thanks for that, too!

I hope to visit again.

We had to write and thank you for a most wonderful stay at Ashling Cottage. (Correction - Make that two wonderful stays!)

You made us feel so special and “pampered”. It was truly needed after the summer we’ve had.

We just love the Inn (and its changes); the views from the porch, the delicious breakfasts and the cozy, friendly atmosphere you have created. (It tends to make your guests more friendly too!)

Your efforts in this first year really showed. May you have the continued energy and enthusiasm to keep it up. We will be back!

Enjoy the “quiet season”.

Love and smiles,
Jeannie, Tony, Sean and Ryan C.

Al and I want to thank you again for your hospitality while we were at Ashling Cottage. You certainly made our wedding weekend even more special. The rooms, the food and the general overall ambiance were wonderful!

We wish you the very best and hope you have a prosperous season.

Good luck and thank you again for everything!

Sincerely,
Judy M.

Wow! What a wonderful respite from our daily routine! The Inn and its hosts, Bill & Joanie, were lovely. The food was heavenly as was the service. Bill and Joanie were so sweet and helped us celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary ( and first getaway!) in a special way!!

I just wanted to drop a note in the mail to let you both know how much Mark and I appreciated our stay at your Cottage. Mark and I have been to a lot of bed & breakfasts and we enjoyed your lovely cooking and hospitality. Although our stay was cut short, I just want to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay and that we will definitely be back soon. We will let you know in advance so that we can put our order in for the peach cobbler.

Thanks again,
Mark and Lisa B.
